What is an ‘Inverter’?
Explaining the Differences and Use Cases
If you’re shopping for inverter technology, it’s easy to assume all inverters do the same thing. In reality, AC inverter drives, power inverters, and solar inverters serve very different purposes. Although we only deal with AC inverters, we thought we’d take a moment to go over how all 3 are used and ensure you are buying the right inverter for your needs.
AC Inverters
- An AC Inverter Drive, also known as a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), is used to control the speed and torque of AC motors. By adjusting the frequency and voltage supplied to the motor, VFDs improve process control, reduce mechanical stress, and significantly lower energy consumption. These drives are commonly found in industrial and commercial settings such as conveyors, pumps, fans, compressors, and manufacturing equipment. Their primary value lies in efficiency, precision, and motor protection rather than power generation.
Power Inverters
- A Power Inverter, on the other hand, focuses on energy conversion rather than motor control. Its job is to convert DC power (typically from batteries or vehicle electrical systems) into usable AC power. Power inverters are widely used in mobile, backup, and off-grid applications, including RVs, boats, emergency power systems, and portable tools. They allow standard AC devices like laptops, appliances, or lighting to operate where utility power is unavailable. Unlike VFDs, power inverters do not regulate motor speed or provide industrial-grade control features.
Solar Inverters
- A Solar Inverter is a specialized type of power inverter designed specifically for photovoltaic (PV) systems. It converts DC electricity generated by solar panels into grid-compatible AC power. Beyond basic conversion, solar inverters manage maximum power point tracking (MPPT), monitor system performance, and ensure compliance with utility grid requirements. They are essential in residential, commercial, and utility-scale solar installations.
In summary, AC inverter drives control motors, power inverters supply AC power from DC sources, and solar inverters enable renewable energy systems. While they share a similar name, their roles, features, and applications are fundamentally different; and choosing the right one makes all the difference.
